A folding dining room table looks great and is also functional, designed to be compacted and stored away when you need extra space. While building this type of table is not a complicated project, it will take some time. This type of dining room table will allow the legs to fold up so that you can store it easily. Follow the simple steps below to build your own dining room table that folds.
Step 1 - Obtain the Supplies
The first part of this process will involve getting the appropriate wood for the job. You will need a large piece for the top of the table and four pieces for the legs. You also need some boards to use for the rim underneath the edge of the table. You should be able to go to the lumber yard and find the appropriate materials. Make sure the piece you choose for the tabletop is thick and sturdy with a relatively smooth finish.
Step 2 - Cut the Boards
Cut the pieces of wood to the appropriate size. Use a tape measure to determine the appropriate dimensions for your table. To determine how big you want your table to be, you need to look at the size of the area in which you plan on putting the table. For example, if you are planning on putting the table in a designated dining room, you should measure out away from the wall approximately three feet to allow people to get in and out of their chairs easily.
Once you know the proper size of each piece, use a tape measure to mark each dimension on the board. Then use your saw to cut the pieces into the appropriate sizes.
Step 3 - Attach Rim
After you have the boards for the rim cut, you need to attach them to the bottom of the table top. Move in a few inches from the outside of the edge of the table and start screwing the boards into place. You may need to drill on a diagonal to allow the screws to go through both boards.
Step 4 - Attach Legs
The next part of the process is to attach the legs. In order to do this, you will use the folding leg brackets. You will attach the brackets to the rim of the table as well as the table top. Then you can attach the brackets to the actual leg pieces. This will allow you to fold the legs of the table up when you need to.
Step 5 - Finish
After you have attached all of the pieces, you should have the basic structure of the table in place. You will then need to sand it down so that it is perfectly smooth. At that point, you can add paint or stain to the table to give it a finished look. You should consider doing at least two coats of either one and include a protective coating on top.
