A garage storage loft can be a practical addition to your garage, because it will help you store things you don’t need or you cannot have in your house. Building a garage store loft can be done easily and fast, meeting your storage needs in an easy and convenient way. You can use the additional space for any type of gear, decoration or off season clothes and other things you don’t use on an everyday basis. Here is a short guide on how to build a garage storage loft in a few easy steps.
Steps 1 – Preparation
The first thing you need to do is buy the tools and materials you will need. The size and number of lumber and timber boards you will need depends on the size of your garage and the size of the loft you want to build. You should check the building and local codes to ensure that you don’t harm the integrity of the building. Determining the size is an important part of the task. You should allow support posts for one floor, making sure that there is still enough space for the car in the garage. If the garage has a high ceiling you should take advantage of it, allowing enough space beneath the garage loft you are building.
Step 2 – Plan the Loft
Use the posts to plan for the garage loft, adding supports, if needed, for a wider or larger loft. Allow enough space for a floor joist every 15in and the boards along the 4 sides of the loft. These simple guidelines will help you decide the size of the lumber you will be using. If you visit a hardware or lumber store, you can have the boards cut at the size you need. If you are familiar with the task you can always cut them yourself, using a circular saw.
Step 3 – Secure the Boards
The next step requires you to secure the boards to the garage walls, using lag bolts. Screw the bolts 3 inches to the studs, making sure that you attach a board at every wall stud. Once you do so, you should attach the anchor of the posts, using a bit for wood. Screw the post, securing it in to its position. Then you should attach the ledger boards, screwing them to the wall boards and the support post on the floor.
Step 4 – Installing the Joists
The next thing you need to do is nail the hangers in to their position on both sides of the frame, sliding the joists in to the hangers. The floor supports should be firm and sturdy to hold and support the garage loft.
Step 5 – Final Touches
Once you are done with the posts, you should take the plywood and lay it over the joists of the loft you have built. Use the deck screws to secure the plywood floor in to its place safely and securely.
