How to Build a Kitchen Storage Shelf Part 1 How to Build a Kitchen Storage Shelf Part 1

What You'll Need
Tape measure
Jig Saw
Safety goggles

Building a kitchen storage shelf can sound like a complicated job, but the work is really both easy and rewarding. One of the most common problems with kitchens is that they can get easily messy and cluttered, lacking any organization as various goods and gadgets find their ways into the room. Building a storage shelf for your kitchen can not only help you organize things around your kitchen, but also add to the decor of the kitchen. Part 1 of this guide will teach you how to decide which wood to use, how to measure it and cut it to make a kitchen storage shelf. The tools and materials required for the job are given below.

Step 1 - Determine the Thickness of Wood You Want to Use

This first step is very important as getting wood that is too thick for this job will make it difficult to work with and getting wood too thin might not be able to withstand the weight of items that will be placed on it after completion. Wood that is 1" thick is perfect for this job and is the most commonly type used.

Step 2 - Taking the Right Measurements

The second step requires good concentration to take accurate measurements. Using a tape measure, take appropriate measurements on the wall that you want the storage cabinet to go onto. This will be a length measurement. Make sure your measurement is straight. Use a level with your tape measure to ensure straightness. This length measurement is the length you will be cutting the wood into for making as many kitchen storage shelves you want.

Step 3 - Cut the Wood

Using the tape measure, mark on the wood the length you want it to be cut. This is the same length of the area that you measured on the wall. After making appropriate markings, cut the wood using a jig saw. Make sure you are wearing gloves and safety goggles when working on wood with a saw. A lot of wood dust tends to fly, and it can cause injury to your eyes if you don't practice proper caution.

Step 4 - Designing the Storage Shelf

This is the part where you choose your own customized design that you want the front edges of the storage shelf to have. Carve out any abstract, pleasing design onto a piece of cardboard and cut it out using scissors. After doing that, place that piece of cardboard on the front edge of the storage shelf and cut around it with a jig saw. You're done cutting and designing the wood that you will be using to make your kitchen storage shelf.
