How to Build a Patio Bench How to Build a Patio Bench
Building your own patio bench will not only enhance the look of your patio, but also allows you to use previously unused areas of your patio. Patio furniture sets usually consist of a table and four chairs which creates a seating problem when you invite guests over for a barbecue during the summer months. A patio bench solves any seating problems and is easy to build in your backyard if you follow these steps.
Step 1 - Cut Boards
Cut 2 pieces of 36 inches in length from one of the 2 by 4 inch boards. These two pieces will make up the front and back braces of your patio bench. Cut 2 more 15 inch pieces using the same 2 by 4 inch board to form the side braces.
Step 2 - Form the Frame
To form the frame, place the 2 front and back 36 inch pieces on their sides parallel to each other and the 15 inch side brace pieces inside the ends of the front and back pieces. The pieces should form a rectangle when placed correctly.
Step 3 - Attach
Attach the pieces by drilling two pilot holes on the outside ends of the front seat brace and another 2 through the ends of the side seat brace and attach with screws. Repeat the process for the back seat brace.
Step 4 - Cut board for Legs
Using the 4 by 4 post cut four 18 inch pieces from it to form the legs of the patio bench.
Step 5 - Attach the Legs
Put the assembled patio bench frame on a flat surface and place each of the 18 inch pieces on the inside of the 4 corners of the frame. Drill 2 pilot holes on the outside of each corner and another 2 holes into the legs. Attach the legs to the frame by using 4 screws each.
Step 6 - Cut Board for Seat
Cut 2 38 inch pieces from the 2 by 4 and one 36 inch piece from the 2 by 10 to form the patio bench top or seat.
Step 7 - Assemble
Turn the frame onto its legs and put one of the 38 inch pieces squarely on top of the frame. Make sure that the board matches the front and sides of the frame and drill eight holes through the seat and into the seat frame at regular intervals. Screw the seat onto the frame.
Put the other 38 inch piece on the frame matching the board with the back and sides of the patio bench frame and drill holes and secure with screws to the frame.
Place the 36 inch piece between the above two attached pieces. Make sure the piece it is centered between the 2 pieces and attach with screws to the frame.
Step 8 - Varnish
Using a good wood varnish, varnish your patio bench and allow it to dry for 24 to 48 hours, place a colorful cushion on the seat, and your patio bench is ready to use.
