How to Build a Pet Ramp and Stairs How to Build a Pet Ramp and Stairs

What You'll Need
Wall foam
Self adhesive rubber feet
Foam adhesive
Utility knife
Upholstery material or carpet remnants

Pet ramp stairs may be the perfect solution for keeping your beloved furry family member a part of the action. As pets age activities such as jumping can be more difficult. If you are like many people, and want to watch television with Fido in your lap, or can't sleep without Fluffy on the bed, you can create some simple stairs to help them out.

Step 1 - Find the Right Dimensions

All dogs will have different needs with steps or ramps. Smaller dogs will need a lower slope to comfortably jump up and down. Larger pets will have a longer stride, and the ramp can be steeper and fewer steps can be used. You also want to consider the width. A good rule of thumb is 12 inches deep for every 10 pounds of weight, and 2 inches of foam for each step for every 10 pounds.

Step 2 - Foam

Foam
It is important that you find a type of foam that will work well for the task at hand. You will need to find a type of foam that is dense, and will not sink in whenever the animal steps up on it as it will make it more difficult for them to jump. A type of foam that has a thin cover or a type of netting over it should be avoided as well. This could easily tangle with the nails of your pet and cause them harm whenever they attempt to jump.
Step 3 – Adhesive
You will need to find a spray on adhesive. This is something that will be able to be found at the same place that you got the foam. The longest piece of foam that you have will then need to be laid flat on the floor. You will then spray the adhesive along the bottom of the 2nd biggest piece of foam that you have. You will then need to get the smaller piece aligned up with the bigger piece. The 2 pieces will need to be aligned at the far end so that they can properly form a step. The adhesive will then need to be sprayed along the smallest piece and along the top of the middle piece. Take care to notice that the farthest end of the piece of foam will align with the other 2. This will make another straight line of foam.
Step 4 – Cover
It may be in you and your pet’s best interest to make a washable cover for the steps. You will need to get a stretchy fabric that is easy to be sewn. Get the piece of fabric cut the same height and length of your steps. You will then get 2 pieces of the fabric cut to shape the side of your foam steps. Then, you will get another piece for the bottom. Once you have all of the necessary pieces cut out, you are now ready to sew them together.Foam
