How to Build a Shoe Storage Bench How to Build a Shoe Storage Bench
A shoe storage bench is a versatile piece of furniture and can be built with a simple design.
Step 1 – Prepare the Timber
This is a very simple design but it will look much nicer if attention is paid to the finish of the timber. Ensure that the timber is cut precisely to size with the ends perfectly square.
Rub the timber down initially with medium grade sand paper to remove any roughness then finish off with very fine grade glass paper. The glass paper will produce a fine satin like finish to the wood.
Step 2 – Prepare the Base
The base will have three ‘skid’ feet on it. These are the 16 inch pieces of timber. They should be nailed to the base two inches in from each end with the middle one 15 inches in from the end pieces. Leave an inch from the front and the back.
Step 3 – Nail on the Uprights
The two end pieces (18 inches by 18 inches) can be nailed to the base flush to each end. The other two pieces the same size can be nailed to the base 10 inches in from the ends. Ensure that the four pieces are square and vertical.
Step 4 – Nail the top to the Uprights
With the base standing on its skid feet it will have four upright sections. The top of the bench (36 inches by 18 inches) can now be nailed to the uprights. The end uprights will fit flush with the edges.
Step 5 – Nail on the Back
Tip the construction forward so that the face is on the floor or a flat surface. The back can be presented and should fit exactly over the top, bottom and uprights. Nail it into position.
Step 6 – The Final Size
The construction is now complete. You have a bench that is 22 inches high and 36 inches long. It is divided into three sections each 18 inches deep by ten inches wide.
Step 7 – Varnish the Bench
The bench will serve as excellent storage but will be much improved if it is either painted or varnished. The wood has already been prepared so it is only a question of ensuring that all nail heads are properly home. Use a punch so that you don’t bruise the wood. Apply the varnish in thin even coats. Allow each coat to dry before rubbing it down with fine glass paper and then applying another coat. Three coats should be enough.
To finish off the bench you might make a cushion to fit along the top and one or two storage boxes to fit into the bench. If you made boxes 10 inches deep you could still store shoes on top of them.
