How to Build a Simple Faux Bois Bench

When building a simple faux bois bench, there are a few steps that you want to make sure you are covering. If you have never done this kind of project before, here are a few tools that you will need, along with the steps to help you through the process. This is really the easiest way to go about this project.

Step 1 - Start the Bench

You will need to begin with the bench itself. Many times for this project people choose to just start with a wooden bench that has already been put together. This works out well because you can find something that is sturdy and will hold up well and also save yourself some time. Benches can be found anywhere from online to a garage sale, or even a hardware store. Many times, people will use an older bench in their home and clean it up for this project so it can be refurbished. If you have a bench or something similar lying around the house, it is a great idea to use it.

You can, however, build the bench yourself if you wish. Using wood, a hammer, and nails, construct a bench of your choice. You can find instructions on how to make the actual bench online. Be sure that it is sturdy and that it can be used for the purpose you have in mind. Whether you build one or use an old bench, make sure that it is clean and has been wiped down. You can use a wood cleaner and a rag or water as well to wash it. Allow the entire bench time to dry completely so that when you begin your project the paint will stick to the wood.

Step 2 - Paint

You can thin out the wood grain paint so that two parts of it is paint and the other part wood paint. Once you have everything mixed together, paint the bench until it has been completely covered. Then use the wood grain tool to drag all of the way across and keep doing this until you have gone through the entire surface. Then, allow it to dry overnight. Make sure that you are using mineral spirits once in a while to wipe down the wood grain tool so that it stays fresh and clean and doesn't cause a build up or clog.

Step 3 - Paint Again

Once everything has dried completely, you can use the contrasting color to paint onto the background. This can be done with the same brush or a different paintbrush as long as it has been cleaned off. Again, wipe off the brush every few strokes so you don't cause a build-up or clog. Allow it to dry and paint on another coat if need be.
