A slat bed is a fairly basic type of bed that uses wooden planks which are places between 2 supports. These supports can either exist as metal or wood. A slat bed is preferred by many people that have bad backs as they offer more support and a firmer area for the mattress. Purchasing a slat is somewhat expensive but you can make your own. The beauty of the slat bed design is that it is possible to be made nearly for free by recycling products you may already have. The article that follows will show you how to build a slat bed out of materials that are readily found.

Step 1 - Breaking Apart the Pallets

Wooden pallets are very durable and are built to last as well as stand up to the environment. They take a lot of abuse on a daily basis and most companies will simply discard them. This is a good for you because you can these wooden pallets as the basis for your slat bed. Pick up several pallets to use but choose ones that look great. Do not use pallets with pieces of wood that are broken or have knots in them. Once you have chosen the best looking pallets use the claw hammer to start removing the planks. Use the hammer and claw end to remove any nails that may be left in the wood.

Step 2 - The Slat Bed Frame

Any bed frame will work for this simple project and most of us have an old one laying around in the attic, garage or basement. You can also purchase a bare frame from a secondhand store and it will not cost you much money. Using pallets as slats is best suited for single, twin and full beds. Put the frame together according to the directions and make sure that it is secure and all joints are locked in place.

Step 3 - Making the Slats

Use the tape measure and measure the distance from one side to the other of the bed frame. Use the exact distance because you want the slats to be secure. Measure the length of the bed from inside the frame from the head to the foot of the frame. The next step is to measure the width of the slats you salvaged from the pallets. Divide the width of these boards with the length of the bed and you will find out how many slats you need to cover the frame. Measure the length of the boards and draw a line where you need to cut the boards in order to fit the width of the frame. Place the boards on the table saw and commence trimming the boards. Trim the length of a board in case the lengths do not measure up.

Step 4 - Assembly

With the frame assembled you simply need to place the slats across the width of the frame and add a mattress.
