A slat bed is a fairly basic type of bed that uses wooden planks, which are placed between two support beams. These support beams can either exist as metal or wood. A slat bed is is the preferred type of bed by many people who have bad backs, as they offer more support and a firmer area for the mattress.
Purchasing a slat bad is somewhat expensive, but you can make your own fairly simply. The beauty of the slat bed design is that it is possible to be made nearly for free by recycling products you may already have.
Step 1 - Breaking Apart the Pallets
Wooden pallets are durable and are built to last, as well as stand up well against the environment. They take a lot of abuse on a daily basis, and most companies will simply discard them when they are done using them. This is a good for you because you can reuse these wooden pallets as the base for your slat bed.
Pick up several pallets to use, but choose ones that look great. In other words, do not use pallets with pieces of wood that are broken or have knots in them. Once you have chosen the best looking pallets, use a claw hammer to start removing the planks. Use the hammer and claw end to remove any nails that may be left in the wood.
Step 2 - The Slat Bed Frame
Any bed frame will work for this simple project, and most of us have an old one laying around in the attic, garage, or basement. You can also purchase a bare frame from a secondhand store without it costing you much money. Using pallets as slats is best suited for single, twin, and/or full beds. Put the frame together according to the manufacturer's instructions, making sure that it is secure and all joints are locked in place.
Step 3 - Making the Slats
Once your fgrame is in place, you're ready to make the slats to place on top. Use a tape measure to determine the distance from one side of the bed frame to the other. Use the exact distance because you want the slats to be secure. Measure the length of the bed from inside the frame, starting from the head of the frame to the foot of the frame.
Then you'll want to measure the width of the slats you salvaged from the wood pallets. Divide the width of these boards with the length of the bed in order to determine how many slats you need in order to cover the entire frame. Measure the length of the boards and draw a line where you need to cut the boards in order to fit the width of the frame. Place each board on the table saw and commence trimming down the boards one-by-one. Trim the length of a board as needed in the case that lengths do not measure up.
Step 4 - Assembly
With the frame assembled, you simply need to place the slats across the width of the frame. Them, add a mattress and fluffy bedding for a satisfying slumber.
