Once your egress window is in place, it's time to build the egress window well. There are many options to choose from when building the window well. Timber is one of those options, and a good one at that.

This is a project that can be done easily and quickly. All you need are the right materials and some direction, then you're good to go. Before you start, you will purchase all your timbers and have them cut to the proper lengths to fit in the window well. Follow these steps to complete the project.

Step 1 - Make Your Outline

Stake the area that you plan to dig the window well. Use your posts or stakes and set them at each corner of the area. Take your string and tie it along each post, so it marks the area where you're window well will be.

This area should be at least double the size of the actual window well. Since this outline is actually for the digging up of the surface, it needs to be large enough to still have an area for the well to be built.

Step 2 - Dig

Use the shovel to dig. Ensure that you dig deep enough that the drainage material can be placed in the bottom with plenty of room to spare. En

Step 3 - Drainage Gravel

Now that the most physical part is over, you can layer the bottom of your hole with drainage gravel. The gravel provides a bottom surface that will let the water in the window well drain without a problem. This gravel comes in many different colors, so you can choose the one that best fits your home and landscaping.

Step 4 - Install the Timbers

Placing the timbers. Lay the timbers horizontally, starting with the back wall. You need to attach each timber with timber nails so that they are secure. Lay each of your timbers to make each wall, attaching them with the timber nails, just as you did for the back wall.

Step 5 - Finishing Up

Install the L-brackets at the inside corners of the well. Attach them with wood screws and your screw gun. These brackets are attached to the corner timbers added more security.
