How to Build a Tree Swing How to Build a Tree Swing
Putting up a tree swing can provide you with a great place for your children to play for many years. Having someplace to go outside to enjoy themselves will make things much easier on you and them. The process of building a tree swing is not complicated, but it will take some work. Here are the basics of how to make a tree swing.
Step 1--Pick the Location
Before you can actually start putting up the tree swing, you are going to want to spend some time selecting the proper location for it. This is probably the most important part of the entire job. You want to select a limb that is strong enough to support the weight. You also want to make sure that you find a location that has a level surface underneath so that you do not have any problems dismounting from the swing. When you are looking at potential places to put the swing, you want to find a limb that is at least 8 inches in diameter. You want to move out about 4 to 5 feet away from the trunk of the tree so that no one will run into it when they are swinging. Make sure that the limb is not rotten either.
Step 2--Prepare the Seat
The next thing that you will want to do is get the seat for your swing ready. This means that you are going to need to cut it to the appropriate size. You will also need to take some sandpaper and sand down the wood. You want to make sure that it is completely comfortable for someone to be able to sit on. At that point, you will want to take your drill and drill holes in each corner of the seat. This way, you will be able to thread the rope down through these holes.
Step 3--Attach the Rope to the Swing
You will then need to attach the rope to the swing. Take your knife and cut two small pieces of rope approximately 4 or 5 feet long. After you cut the rope, you need to use a lighter to melt the ends of the rope. This will keep it from unraveling later on down the line. Take one of them and put both ends through the two holes on one side of the seat. You will want to tie a good knot underneath the seat with these two edges of the rope. You will then need to do the exact same thing on the other side of the seat.
Step 4--Attach the Rope to the Tree
You will then need to get your ladder and climb up to the limb. Use your drill to drill two holes down through the limb. Put your eye bolts down through these holes. Attach the rope to the eye bolts and then you can tighten the bolts with your screwdriver.
Step 5--Attach the Rope
You will then need to attach the two pieces of rope from the seat to the main pieces of rope that are coming down from the eye bolts.
