How to Build a Trellis for Climbing Rose Plants
Building a trellis for climbing rose plants sounds a little daunting. This task though really isn't as hard as you may think. The final result of beautiful climbing roses around your home is worth all of the work put into it. Here are a few materials and steps to guide you through the process with ease.
Step 1 - Build the Trellis
The first thing that you will need to do is lay the wooden boards out in front of you horizontally. Then, place 5 of the wooden boards with the ends up about 2 inches apart from one another. Then, you will want to take the next 5 wooden boards that you have and cross them over to make the criss cross trellis design. Be sure to keep these boards 2 inches apart from each other as well. Next you can use a hammer to nail the boards together where one meets the next. You will want to keep doing this until you reach the desired height and width for your trellis. You may want to check periodically how it is fitting in the space that you want it to be as you are putting it together so you can adjust as you go along.
Step 2 - Paint and Stain
If you want to paint the trellis a certain color then you will want to use exterior paint and a paint brush to get the job done. Make sure that they dry completely before you do anything more with them. If you decide not to paint them or once you are done painting, you will want to treat or stain them to make sure that they hold up to rain and watering. Again, use a paint brush to cover the trellis completely and then allow it to dry.
Step 3 - Attaching
Line the trellis up where you want it. If you are placing it against a fence then you can use wire to tie the fence to the trellis and secure it. If you are doing it against your house you will want to drill in hooks that keep it secured. Then, carefully guide any roses that you already have up through the trellis. They will continue to grow and climb through.
Be sure that while you are working with the actual roses that you are wearing gloves so that you do not get hurt.
These steps will guide you through building and installing your trellis. This is a great way to not only show off the plants that you have but also to allow the roses to grow and thrive upwards. Be sure to check on them every once in a while to make sure that they do not get caught and hinder growth. You can simply pull out a section that is stuck and move it to another angle that allows it to grow more efficiently.
