Building your own twin slat bed is a great project for anyone who is interested in making home-made furniture. A slatted bed is a kind of bed with a rectangular frame around the outside edge of the mattress and horizontal slats going across the open inside of the frame to support the mattress. The following set of step by step instructions will give you all the information you need to build your own twin slat bed.

Step 1: Attach Sideboards to Top and Bottom Boards

On a large, flat area, such as in your garage or on your driveway, lay the two 39-inch boards side by side, and place the 67-inch boards between them so that they are flush with the corners. Drill pilot holes into the sides of the 39-inch boards so that four holes bore into each end of the end of the 67-inch boards, then screw the four boards together.

Step 2: Attach the Slats

On the inside of the frame, lay the eight 2 by 4 boards at equal intervals so that they are laying horizontally across the frame and touching both 67-inch boards. Drill pilot holes in the sides of the 67-inch boards so that two holes bore into each end of all eight slats, then screw the slats in place.

Step 3: Attach Supports

Flip the frame over and place the six 6-inch 4 by 4 boards so that they are standing upright on the bottom of the frame. One should be at each corner of the frame, and one should be half way across both 67-inch boards. Use wood glue to hold these in place, and flip the frame back over once the glue is dry. Drill pilot holes in the top of the 67-inch boards so that four bore into each support board, then secure them in place with screws.

Step 4: Attach Headboards

Glue four of the 16-inch 4 by 4 boards evenly spaced along the top and bottom of the frame, making sure not to place them over the support boards. Placing these boards directly over the support boards will make them much harder to screw on. Flip the frame over and screw them in place in the same way you have been screwing everything else together. Flip the frame over again and attach the two 39-inch 2 by 4 boards to the tops of the 16-inch 4 by 4 boards.

Slat beds are one of the easiest varieties to build yourself. Also, they are essential for certain types of mattresses, such as memory foam or futons. This is because they allow air to flow through the bottom of the mattress. If these types of mattresses didn't have proper air flow to the bottom, perspiration would build up, allowing mold to grow.
