How to Build a Wooden Shade Structure for Over Your Jacuzzi

A wooden shade structure over a Jacuzzi is beautiful. The structure will provide shade and ambiance to your outdoor space. This is essential when you're expecting to invite guests over often to enjoy your jacuzzi. Also, if your deck is surrounded by trees, and don't want the hassle of having leaves dirtying your hot tub's water, a shade structure is ideal. This project is fun, and can be done with ease. However, it is important to stay focused when you are building your structure. Also, remember to read the instructions carefully.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Safety glasses
  • Wood pieces
  • Expansion bolts
  • Wood screws
  • Lag bolts
  • Washers
  • Chalk
  • Post bases
  • Retractable tape measure
  • Skill saw
  • Hammer drill
  • Impact driver

Step 1 - Dress Correctly

Before you start building the structure, dress correctly. Put on your safety glasses, your rubber gloves and work clothes. Remember that you will be working with wood and tools and you can easily be hurt you so you should be cautious and dress appropriately.

Step 2 - Measure the Area

You will need to measure the area where you want to place the structure. The structure you will be building with these instructions will be a shade structure for a 270 square foot area. The 4 columns will be 6 feet from the base. Mark the wood and the area according to your measurements and use the circle saw to cut the wood. Remember that this structure will also have a roof.

Step 3 - Set the Base

The 4 columns will form a rectangle. Set one wood column at a 1.6 inches distance from one corner of the room, and then set the second one in the next corner. The third column will be set 16 inches away from the second column and the last one will be 24 inches away from the first column. Mark the location of each column and use the hammer drill and expansion bolts to anchor the post bases to the concrete floor. Place each column on a base.

Step 4 - Connect the Columns

To connect the columns with a roof, place one wood plank horizontally across the top of the first and the second columns. Use the impact driver to insert the wood screw and use the lag bolts to secure them. It has to look like an inverted “U.” Do the same with the third and the fourth columns. Follow the same procedure for the remainder of the columns, but place the wood plank above the other horizontal wood planks. When you’re finished with this step, the structure will look like a cube.

Step 5 - Work at the Top

To give form to the structure, you have to work on the roof. This is an important element because it will provide you with the shade you’re looking for. Place approximately 5 wood planks that are parallel to the top, in horizontal form. Connect the first with the third, and the second with the fourth column. Then, secure the columns using wood screws on both sides of the lateral boards.
