How to Build an Ice Luge Stand

An ice luge is a sufficiently huge block of ice with channels built for pouring spirits (typically liquor) down. A pre-determined amount of liquid is dispensed at the top and in a matter of a couple of seconds a chilled drink is doled out at the bottom, usually into an open mouth. It is considered almost essential for having fun at a party or get together and if you are hosting one, then making an easy, simple and inexpensive ice luge is the way to go. Use the tools and materials mentioned below as the following steps explain to have fun with your personalized ice luge

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Block of ice
  • Measuring tape
  • Plastic container/tub
  • Water
  • Silicone mold (optional)
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer (optional)
  • Blow torch/heated curling iron (optional)

Step 1 - Purchase the Ice

Buy a huge block of ice from a nearby dealer.

Step 2 - Choose and Purchase your Mold

Measure and determine the size of your freezer from the inside with the help of a measuring tape. Purchase a plastic container or tub from your nearest supply store selecting the size or shape you desire. However, the typical dimensions or specifications of your tub are usually 2 feet by 4 feet by 6 inches. Fill in about a quarter of your container (usually 4 inches) with water. It is advised that you use a silicone mold instead of a plastic one if you require a more elaborate ice luge. Whereas, for a smaller luge it is recommended that you use a container which is smaller in size and fill that up with water.

Step 3 - Place it in the Freezer

Once the water has been filled, place your block of ice in the freezer, tilting it at a right angle so as to build a slope for the ice luge. Let your container rest in this particular position for a few hours. The amount of time it takes the water to freeze depends primarily on the size of your ice luge.

Step 4 - Get the Ice Out

Remove the container from the freezer and put the mold upside down so as to get the ice out.

Step 5 - Build the Channels

There are various ways to go about making the canals on your ice luge. You may use a screwdriver and a hammer. Be sure that you are experienced in handling a hammer if you choose to apply it. You can also put a blow torch to use and can also use a heated curling iron. Carve out two channels; one connecting to a larger block of ice and the other to the relatively smaller block. Pour out hot water over your canals so as to smoothen your ice luge out.

Step 6 - Use the Luge Safely

Take safety precautions before you start to use your ice luge for drinks. If you used a sufficiently large block of ice then it should be significantly heavy too and the risk of someone getting hurt is high. Therefore, at all times have two people managing your luge. One person could pour the drinks out while the other could hold onto the ice assuring that it keeps tight and secure in its place.
