How to Build an Octagon Poker Table How to Build an Octagon Poker Table
An octagon poker table is the ideal way to enjoy a night of poker at your home. Every player has a section with room for drinks as well as a good playing surface. Rather than buying an octagon poker table you can make your own. It doesn’t require extensive knowledge of woodworking, but takes time and you do need the proper tools.
Step 1 - Wood
Start your octagon poker table by planning the sizes and the wood you’ll use. The best solution is to have a heavy wood for the octagon poker table base with plywood for the covered area and good wood for the top.
Begin by finding the center of the plywood and tapping in a nail. Take a piece of string that’s half the diameter of the octagon poker table you want. Attach one end to the nail and the other to a pencil. Draw a circle on the wood and cut it out with the jig saw.
Step 2 - Octagon
You want the poker table to have eight sides, not to be circular. To create the sides, lay down the plywood you’ve cut out. You’ll need to measure out the angles. Once you’ve marked the corners to be cut, cut them with the Skilsaw.
Step 3 - Good Wood
Take the piece of good wood (oak is always an excellent choice) and place it so the better side is face down. Put the cut plywood on top and use it as a template to make out the octagonal shape and cut the wood.
Step 4 - Making the Table
Line up the two pieces of wood. You need to screw them together, going down from the oak into the plywood. Locate the screws along the inch going in from the rim where they will be covered. Sand the oak until it’s properly smooth and remove all the sawdust with a tack cloth before staining and finishing with polyurethane.
Step 5 - Playing Circle
Make a circle of wood that’s smaller than the octagon. Put it on the oak, making sure it’s in the exact center. Having someone else hold it, drill four holes that go through all the wood. Put bolts into the holes in the circle.
Step 6 - Foam
Cut foam to the size of the circle. Spray adhesive onto the wood circle and lay the foam in place, smoothing it out so it’s even. Once dry, spray adhesive over the foam and then lay the felt in place, carefully smoothing it out. The felt will be larger than the circle. Create darts with it that will cover the sides of the circle and be held in place with tacks. Trim off any excess felt from the table. Put the bolts through the table and tighten the bolts on the underside. Use more felt around the outsides of the table to forma a rim, stapling it in place.
Step 7 - Legs
Flip the octagon poker table upside down. Place your fold up legs so they’re centered on the table, and then screw them into place.
