An umbrella table provides a great place to relax or party with your friends on a hot summer day in your backyard. It consists of a table with an umbrella in the middle, which can be folded down when not in use. You can build a table of any size, a small coffee table or a large dining table. If you build a small table, your umbrella needs to be small and if you build a large table, you will need a bigger umbrella.

Step 1 – Planning the Design

First of all, plan how you are going to build the table. The 4 1 by 4s are for the table frames on four sides. The 8 2 by 4s are for the four legs, 2 bases and 2 stretchers, and the 12 1 by 4s are for the table top. The size of the shaft of the umbrella should be 1 1/2 inches. This measurement is for building an umbrella table for 4-person setting.

Step 2 – Marking the Measurements on the Lumber

The longer side of the table needs to be 44 inches, and the other 2 1 by 4s need to be 42 1/2 inches. Among the 8 2 by 4s, 4 of them should be 26 3/4 inches and 2 of them should be 42 1/2 inches. The remaining 2 by 4s are for the stretchers, 1 should be 42 1/2 inches and the other one should be 35 1/2 inches. Measure and mark all the measurements.

Step 3 – Cutting the Lumber for Umbrella Table

Cut the lumber to size. To do this, use a circular saw.

Step 4 – Pre-drill Holes for Screws

Drill 2 holes at each end of all the cut pieces. The long stretcher lumber will need 2 holes at the ends and 1 hole in the center. The shorter stretcher lumber needs only 1 hole in the center.

Step 5 – Join the Cut Pieces Together

Place the 2, 44 inch pieces parallel to each other on the workbench. Then, place the 42 1/2 inch frame pieces on the opposite sides parallel to each other. Apply wood glue on the edges and screw them in place. Similarly, place the 4 legs on 4 corners of the frame and secure them in place using glue and screws. Also, screw in the base pieces to the legs on the shorter sides of the frame.

Step 6 – Attach the Stretcher to the Frame

Screw the two stretchers together at the middle. Then, attach the longer one to the base, across the width of the umbrella table.

Step 7 – Prepare the Lumber for the Tabletop

Measure and cut the 12 1 by 4s, so that the pieces extend 1 1/8 inches outside the table. Pre-drill 2 holes on each end of the cut pieces. Mark the center of the table and place the center piece first. Secure it in place using screws. Then, place all other pieces on both sides and screw them in place.

Step 8 – Attach the Umbrella

Drill a 1 1/2 inch hole on the center piece, using a hole saw. Place the umbrella inside the hole. Your umbrella table is now ready to use.
