You can build your own custom wood doors for your bathroom cabinet. The doors can be finished with a stain or a paint covering, depending on your bathroom décor. This home project is a simple process and can be completed in a weekend.

Step 1 – Measuring the Bathroom Cabinet

Use your measuring tape to determine the size of the opening to your bathroom cabinet. You will be installing two doors over this space. Add an inch to the width measurement so that your doors will be wide enough to overlap the cabinet. Divide the width measurement in two to find the width of each of the doors. Write the measurements onto a piece of paper.

Step 2 – Choosing Your Wood

Visit your local lumber or home improvement store and speak with a professional about your plans to build doors for your bathroom cabinet. Take your measurements with you. Be sure to use lumber that is ¾ inch thick. Choose a type of wood that goes well with your bathroom décor and that fits into your budget.

Step 3 – Cutting the Doors

Use your measuring tape to mark the dimensions for your cabinet doors onto your lumber. Cut the doors out of the lumber with your power saw. Attach a piece of fine sandpaper to your power sander. Use your power sander to smooth out the surface of the wood.

Step 4 – Applying a Finish

Use your paint brush to apply a stain or a paint finish to your cabinet doors. Read the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the stain or the paint before you use it. Apply the finish in long, even strokes. Be sure to work in the same direction as the wood grain. Allow the finish enough time to dry completely. If necessary, apply a second coat of finish to the doors and allow it to dry.

Step 5 – Attaching the Door Hinges

Position your doors onto a hard, flat surface. Place the doors so that they are facing downward. Use a pencil and your measuring tape to mark a spot about four inches from the top and bottom of the doors. Position the hinges onto the door at the place you marked. Use a level to make sure the hinges are sitting in a level position. Use your screws and screwdriver to secure the hinges to the door. Continue the process with the second door.

Step 6 – Attaching the Door Knobs

Position your doors so they are facing upward. Use your pencil and measuring tape to mark a spot about two inches from the edge of the door. Use your screws and screwdriver to secure the knob to the door. Continue the process with the second door.

Step 7 – Securing the Doors to the Cabinet

You will need a friend or family member to help you secure the door to the cabinet. Use your level to be sure one of the doors is set in a level position. Use your screws and screwdriver to secure the door to the cabinet. Continue the process with the second door.
