How to Build Stable Glass Display Shelves
Glass display shelves are a wonderful addition to any room and help create a touch of elegance and style with a storage solution facility. Furthermore, glass shelves can be installed directly on your wall, and therefore, you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to the combination and positioning of different sized glass display shelves.
Step 1 – Preparation
The first thing you need to do is to measure up the size of each shelf and take note of it. Put the same markings on the wall where the shelves will be hung. It is best to order the glass already cut to measurement and with a seamed edge. However, you can cut down the glass yourself; in this case, follow step 2. Keep in mind that no matter how strong the glass may be, you should not make them too long because they might break with added weight. Therefore, keep a maximum length of 3 to 4 feet for each glass panel. At this point, you will also need to order the brackets on which the shelves will be hanging, so you will need a pair of brackets for each panel. Remember that there is a huge range of colors for such metal brackets, so you can match them up with the rest of the décor in the room. Also remember to wear protective gloves when working with glass to avoid cutting yourself.
Step 2 – Cutting Down the Glass
Take hold of a damp cloth which is larger than the glass panels and place it on your working area. Now, get a glass panel and place it on the cloth. You can use the measuring tape and whiteboard marker to jot down the measurements on the glass panel. Now place your straightedge on the markings and secure it with duct tape. With your glass cutter, score the glass following the straightedge. Make sure that your cutter is very well lubricated with cutting oil. Once the score is cut, remove both tape and straightedge and lightly tap the glass on the marked line. Then, place the glass on an overhanging edge and apply light pressure to snap the glass where it is marked and cut. Repeat this step with every glass shelf you plan to hang.
Step 3 – Installing the Brackets
At this point, you can choose to either use the studs found in your drywall with the help of a stud finder or use drywall brackets if you cannot use the studs. Your wall should already be marked with the shelf measurements, so now get your drill and make pilot holes for the brackets. Take hold of a hammer and push the anchors in the pilot holes by tapping lightly on them. Now, you can screw the brackets in the walls and anchors. Remember, you will need 2 brackets for each glass panel. Repeat this step until all panels have a pair of brackets to sit on.
Step 4 – Finishing Up
Once the brackets are installed, you can place the glass panels on top of them. If you want to fully secure the shelves to the wall, you should install glass clamps in line with your brackets (you can follow step 3 to install them) and slide the glass panels in them. This way, your panels will never topple over.
This is the easiest way to build sturdy glass display shelves. Remember that glass is strong and gives a touch of elegance which can never be achieved with wood, so use your imagination to bring the best results out of your space.
