How to Build Wardrobe Cabinets
Are you running out of room to store your wardrobe? Does your home just not have enough space or closets to store all of your clothing? If so, there is a simple solution. Build a set of wardrobe cabinets and you will not only have a functional piece of furniture but you will have something that is stylish and a great addition to any bedroom. Don't think about purchasing a wardrobe cabinet when you can make one yourself by following these easy directions below.
Step 1 - Organize Your Clothing
Before you begin your project, start to go through your entire closet and organize your clothing. It probably has been a while since you have gone through and decided what clothing you wish to keep and which clothing you should throw away. Take some time to toss the articles of clothes you no longer need. This will help you organize once your cabinets are built.
Step 2 - Design Your Cabinet
On a piece of paper, sketch out the design for your cabinet. If your cabinet will become another piece of furniture in your bedroom, design it with doors. If you are building a cabinet to fit inside your closet then omit the cabinet doors as you only need the additional shelving space.
The measurements for your cabinet should be as follows:
- Top Height: Measure the top of your ceiling. If you have an 8 foot high ceiling, make sure the cabinet does not exceed 6 feet tall. This will leave you a little room to put items on top
- Sides: The height of the sides of your cabinets should be the same as the height of the top of your cabinet.
- Depth: The depth of the cabinet should not be any longer than what your arm's length. Most cabinets are made no deeper than 2 feet.
- Shelves: The shelves should be rectangular in shape, they should be at least 6 inches shy of the cabinet depth. The length of the shelves should be equal to the length of your cabinet, less an inch or 2 to allow for installation room.
Step 3 - Purchase Wood
At your local home improvement center, purchase wood. Purchase pine or something nice if you are going to display the cabinet in the room. If you are installing doors, and if your cabinet is a standard height, you will be able to find some great pre-fabricated doors to finish your cabinet off.
Step 4 - Cut the Pieces
Cut all the wood pieces for your cabinet. Start by cutting the back and the sides. Then cut the shelving. Be sure to measure all the wood before you make any of the cuts. After you have cut the first shelf, check to make sure you have the right dimensions. If everything looks great, then continue cutting the rest of your shelving.
Step 5 - Assemble the Wardrobe Cabinet
Using wood glue and nails, assemble the wardrobe cabinet. Fill the holes with some wood glue. Allow it to dry 24 hours. After it has completey finished drying, use a small piece of sandpaper to smooth the edges.
Step 6 - Paint or Stain
Add finishing touches to your wardrobe cabinet. Pick and paint or a stain and give your cabinets some color and a little bit of life. If you are adding your cabinet to your closet, then place it at the back of the closet, flush with the wall. Taking screws and a screw gun, fix all four corners on the back of the wall, to make sure the cabinet does not move or come out of place during with all the clothing stored inside.
