How to Build Your Own Air Conditioner How to Build Your Own Air Conditioner

What You'll Need
Fan (box fan is ideal)
Cooler of choice
Aquarium pump or a pound pump , 132 GPH or more
3/8-inch outer diameter copper coil, 20 feet for copper coil tubing
1/2 -inch inner diameter vinyl tubing
Reducers and fittings
2 1/2 -inch to 3/8-inch couplers
5/8-inch threaded couplers
Screwdriver
1/2 -inch barbed brass adapters (2)
1-inch hose clamps (3)
Wood
Zip ties
Teflon tape

You do not necessarily have to be an engineer to make an air conditioner yourself. Follow the simple steps below to build your own air conditioner in no time.

Step 1 – Getting Started

Remove the protective screen of the box fan. Then set the copper tubing to place the fittings. Mark the places for attaching the fittings and then place the copper tubing in place of the protective screen. Keep bending the tubing into spirals giving room between each circle for adequate surface area. This will not be very difficult as the copper tubing is already coiled.

Step 2 – Attaching the Fittings to the Copper Tubing

Attach the fittings following the marks you made on the copper tubing. If you can not find solder-less compression type fittings, then you will have to connect the joints between the copper tubing and the fittings. You can prepare the fittings by sanding the copper tubing and reaming the fittings.

After that, apply some solder flux to the internal side of the fitting and to the external side of the copper tubing. Before applying the solder, heat the fitting until the solder melts. For the other end of the tubing, repeat the same procedure.

Step 3 – Assembling the Vinyl Tubing

Take out your screw driver and both the barbed brass adapters for your vinyl tube. Use your Teflon tape to tape the threads. Screw the barbed adapter firmly to avoid the vinyl tubing from slipping. After making sure that the tubing is secure and that there is no room for leakage, you are ready for the next step.

Step 4 – Attaching and Connecting the Tubing

You will attach to the copper tubing to the fan screen with the zip ties. It is recommended to place 4 or more zip ties so that the tubing is firmly fixed against the fan screen. Place the fan screen back on the box fan and screw it, tightly. It is advisable that you get your vinyl tubing into the cooler from the top to avoid leakages .Using a small drill machine, drill 3 holes for the inlet and outlet of copper tubing and for the power cord of the pump, respectively.

Step 5 – Using your Air Conditioner

Put a plate underneath your box fan to take the condensation from the coil. Place your fan and cooler side by side and fill your cooler with sufficient water to cover the pump. Put cold water, ice, or water filled with salt water to start off. Don’t forget to check and adjust the fan speed before you switch on the pump.
