There are a great number of electrical appliances that run efficiently on rechargeable batteries since they can easily be recharged. These batteries also prove to be quite inexpensive over the long run. There are several kinds of rechargeable batteries available in the market ranging from lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, and other such materials. Replacing a rechargeable battery can be expensive however, and in this case it is advisable to build your own. The process of building a rechargeable battery shall be explained in great detail below.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Lead wires
- Pieces of metal
- Muscle cleaner
- Pair of scissors
- DC power supply
- Kitchen towel/paper
Step 1 – Safety Precautions
When undergoing this activity, it is essential that you keep on hand a few items with regard to your safety. Firstly, since you shall be dealing with a wide range of substances, it is best that you put on rubber gloves and eye goggles as well. Moreover, keep the materials being used far away from water and other such liquid substances.
Step 2 – Cut Metal Plates
Now it is time to actually start manufacturing the rechargeable battery. Take the metal plates, and using scissors, cut them into about ten pieces each. The dimensions of the metal pieces should be approximately 25 by 25 inches. Make small tabs on top of each metal plate, meaning small engravings on the surface of the metal. Now, cut the lead wire into small pieces and attach it with the small incisions (tabs) that you have made on the metal. Make sure the wires are inserted properly and do not come off loose.
Step 3 – Connect Metal Plates with Tape
The next step is to connect the metal plates together. Put the tabbed metal plate on a flat surface, and then place a small piece of folded paper on top of this metal piece. Cover up that metal piece with a non-tabbed piece now. Do this for all of the metal plates that you have cut out. Use the tape and start taping the pieces of metal together. Do ensure that you tape them properly so that they don’t come off loose.
Step 4 – Spray with Muscle Cleaner
Once the pieces of metal have been taped together, the next step is to cover the metal pieces with muscle cleaner. Dip the taped pieces of metal into the muscle cleaner until the paper in between the metal plates is completely moist. Wait for the metal plates to dry off completely before moving onto the next step.
Step 5 – Charge Battery
The battery is almost complete. You will need to charge it using a DC power supply. With the help of the wires connected to the metal plates, connect it with the power supply. Leave the battery to charge for approximately an hour or two. The battery can even be left to charge for up to three days. However, make sure that you keep a constant check on it because it can reheat and let off steam very easily. Once the battery has been fully charged, it is ready for use in all sorts of electrical devices.
