How to Care for a Feather Bed

A feather bed, if maintained properly, can provide years of comfort and sound sleep. Quality feather beds are expensive, so make sure you take care of it from day one.

Place your feather bed in a cover before you lay it on your mattress to extend its life, protect it from dust, dirt and spills, and keep it clean longer. Launder the cover when you change your bed linen.

Examine the cover every week for spots or spills. Work up some lather on the spot with a mild detergent and wipe it away with a towel to remove as much moisture as possible. Avoid using excess water because it could cause mildew or mold. Air-dry the bed on a clothesline before placing it back on the mattress.

Hang your featherbed outdoors in the sun twice a month to keep it fresh and clean.

Your body weight will cause a hollow to form and eventually create a sagging mattress, so fluff and rotate it weekly to evenly distribute the filling.

Add more feathers to your featherbed if it looses its fluff over the years.

Make sure you vacuum your featherbed at least twice a month to remove any accumulated dirt and maintain the mattress.
