How To Change Hinges on Bifold Closet Doors
Bifold closet doors used on a daily basis will quickly start to show the signs of age. The hinges can start to wear out, which will make it very difficult to open and close the doors. Changing the hinges on bifold closet doors is actually much easier than you might think. If you have the right tools and materials at your disposal then you should be able to change the hinges in no more than a day.
Step 1 - Removing the Doors
Removing bifold closet doors from the tracks shouldn't be that difficult. Press down the spring loaded pins in the corners of the hinges, and then carefully lift the doors out of the closets. Try to do this carefully so that you don't risk breaking any of the pegs off.
Step 2 - Preparing the Work Area
Next you need to prepare the work area by placing a large sheet on the floor. This will give you a large area to work on, just make sure that it's the right size for the doors to be laid down flat.
Step 3 - Removing the Hinges
Lay the doors down flat on the area of floor that you have prepared to work on face down. This means that you should have clear access to the piano hinges at the back of the doors. Use a screwdriver to undo each of these screws, and keep the screws so that you can use them again on the new hinges. Carefully remove the hinges so that you don't cause any damage to the doors.
Step 4 - Buying New Hinges
You now need to buy replacement piano hinges, try to buy the same type of hinges that are currently used on your door. This will make fitting them to the doors much easier. Your local DIY or home hardware store will have plenty of these different hinges available.
Step 5 - Measuring and Cutting Hinges
When the old hinges have been removed you must measure the size of the original hinges. Try and do this as accurately as possible. Then mark the measurements on the new sets of piano hinges and cut them. They can be cut using either hacksaws or circular saws. This shouldn't be very difficult and once they are the right size they are ready to be fitted.
Step 6 - Fitting the New Hinges
Once you have cut the hinges you must then fit them onto your doors. Where possible try to use the existing holes that the original hinges used. If you do have to drill new holes then use a small drill bit in the drill. Make sure that you don't drill right through the door because this will damage the face of the bifold door panel.
The hinges can then be fitted to the doors by using the original screws/ This shouldn't be a problem as long as the hinges are the same thickness.
