A freezer door seal that is working properly can have a huge impact on the energy efficiency of your freezer. A freezer door gasket that has deteriorated will allow cold air to escape from the freezer. You can determine if your freezer gasket is working properly by following the 4 steps below.
Step 1 – Check for Wear
Regularly check the seals on your freezer for wear, especially if your unit is older.
Step 2 – Check for Cold Air
Check around your freezer door with you hand. If you feel cold air, it can be a sign that your gasket is leaking air.
Step 3 – Check Space
Do a simple inspection of your gasket by slipping a sheet of paper or a dollar bill between the door edge and the freezer edge, then close the door. If you can move the paper or dollar bill easily out of the door, this is another indication that your gasket is not sealing properly.
Step 4 - Use a Flashlight Check
Another way to determine if your gasket is not sealing properly, is to leave a lighted flashlight inside the freezer, shut the door, look for light escaping through the gasket. If you do detect light, then the gasket is not functioning properly
