If you have ever taken a shower and have had the misfortune to run out of hot water, you are no doubt aware of the frustration of having a hot water tank that is too small to meet your family’s needs. Purchasing a tank that is too large will be a waste of your money. Buying one that is too small will likely result in your running out of hot water. The following four tips will assist you in choosing the right size of water heater.

1 - Family of Two

If you have a family of two, and if you have a single bathroom and a washing machine, a 30-gallon water heater should adequately meet your needs.

2 - Multiple Bathrooms

For every bathroom in your home, in addition to your single bathroom, add 3 1/2 gallons to the capacity of the tank you buy.

3 - Dishwashers

If you have a dishwasher in your home, add another five gallons to your tank capacity.

4 - Family Lifestyle

When considering the size of tank to purchase, also consider your family’s lifestyle. Is it likely more than one person will be showering at the same time? If so, add 10 gallons to your tank capacity.
