How to Clean a Bathroom Mat How to Clean a Bathroom Mat

Cleaning a bathroom mat is a simple task that must be carried out on a regular basis. Cleaning bathroom mats prevents the growth of mold, mildew, and other harmful bacteria that develop in a wet and humid bathroom environment.

There are two types of bathroom mats: internal and external. Internal bathroom mats lay on the bottom surface of the bathtub; they provide traction and reduce the likelihood of a fall.

External mats are typically found on the bathroom floor, adjacent to the bathtub and/or toilet. These mats are often made out of material that is similar to carpet to aid in absorption.

The most effective means of cleaning external bathroom mats is to wash and dry them in a machine washer and dryer. It is imperative that the bathroom mats are completely dry before they’re placed back on the floor.

Internal bathroom mats may also be washed and dried in a machine, but often times one cycle isn’t enough to clean it. Instead, grab a container that is large enough to hold the internal mat(s) and fill it up with 2/3 hot water and 1/3 bleach.

Soak the internal mat in the bleach solution for two or three hours, scrubbing if necessary with a bristle brush before air-drying and reapplying to the shower.
