How to Clean a Bearskin Rug

Knowing how to clean a bearskin rug will save you the effort and money of hiring someone to do the task. You will no longer have to deal with a dull bearskin rug because you do not want to pay to have it cleaned. Armed with the right knowledge, you will easily clean your rug to look like new.
Step 1 - Vacuum the Rug
In order to get ready to clean your rug, you will need to get rid of all loose dirt. This will allow you to be able to concentrate on only the dirt that is trapped in the fibers of the rug. Simply hang up the rug and use a handheld vacuum without a rotating beater to vacuum loose dirt. Occasionally beat the rug to get excess dirt out from beneath the hair. Continue to vacuum until no more dust comes out when you hit it.
Step 2 - Scrub the Rug
In order to clean the rug, you need to take a soft approach. Remember that fur does not take well to being treated roughly. Use cold water with fur cleaner to brush the rug clean. Start at one end and brush the hairs with the grain. Dip the brush into the soap solution every time you are going to brush the fur. Do not scrub back and forth, as this will loosen the hairs on the fur.
If you encounter a stain on your rug, brush the area several times until the stain comes up. If it persists, treat with a liberal dose of the cleaning solution and come back to it when you are done with the rest of the rug.
Step 3 - Hang the Rug
In order to dry the rug, the best conditions will be on a cool, dry, windy day. Hang the rug with clothespins in order to have as little overhang as possible. If the weather will not cooperate with your cleaning plans, hang the rug indoors with floor fans directed at it. Make sure to brush the hair often in order to keep it from clumping or getting frizzy. Bend and flex the skin to keep it from getting stiff.
When the carpet is dry, vacuum it one more time to make sure there are no residues left from the cleaning.
Step 4 - Protect the Rug
To protect the rug from future stains, you can use a protective spray such as Scotchgard. Simply spray it on the carpet and allow to dry completely. Brushing the hair often will also help to keep the fur soft and inviting. When dry, lay the carpet back on the floor.
