How to Clean a Vinyl Soffit How to Clean a Vinyl Soffit
A dirty vinyl soffit can be a serious problem. Nobody wants a home with a dirty exterior, and vinyl can retain dirt if it is ignored for long enough. Additionally, vinyl is porous enough to stain. However, it is possible to reverse these effects if you know the proper techniques to use. Rather than experimenting for yourself, wasting time, effort, and supplies, the best way to clean your soffit involves planning ahead with the right information. What follows should give you enough information to get your vinyl soffit clean and keep it that way.
Step 1 - Rinsing the Soffit
If you can use hot water to rinse off your vinyl before cleaning it, you will be off to a good start. Luckily, this should be possible even for people who do not have access to an outdoor hot spigot. Connect your garden hose to the most convenient source of hot water. If it is a hot spigot located nearby, you are in luck. However, if you do not have one, you can use the hot water valve in your laundry room. Next, put on your rubber gloves. Remember, you are working with pure hot water, as opposed to the mixture you would normally use in your home, so it is best to completely avoid coming into contact with the water.
Once you have a source of hot water, use your hose and sprayer attachment to rinse off the vinyl soffit with hot water. Spray from a higher place pointing down if possible, as spraying upwards can lead to water getting between cracks and causing damage.
Step 2 - Using the Cleanser
There are many different vinyl cleaning products available for you to choose from. However, as long as you can use your cleaning product of choice with your sprayer attachment, they will all work equally well for your purposes. Use the cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions, and put it into your spray attachment. Go over your vinyl with this mixture of hot water and cleaner. Again, do your best to spray downwards rather than up.
Once you have done this, you will need to remove the cleaner from your spray attachment and rinse your vinyl with plain hot water a second time.
Step 3 - Finishing Up
After completing the two steps listed above, you should have a clean vinyl soffit. However, it is possible that your soffit will have a few problem spots left over that were able to resist the quick cleaning you just gave them. If this is the case, you will need to give them some extra attention. Get out your bucket and fill it with hot water from your hose. Next, squirt in a small amount of ordinary dish soap. Mix the two together, and dip your scrubbing brush in the mixture. You should be able to clean off any dirty spots by scrubbing them with your brush. Rinse the brush and dip it in soapy water again as needed.
When you are finished, rinse the soffit and it should be as good as new.
