A garden water fountain is a magnificent way to add a decorative classy touch to your garden, however, being in a garden, its pipes can easily get dirty. Like everything else in your house, the pipes of a garden water fountain need to be regularly cleaned to avoid maintenance issues.
Step 1 - Preparation
The first thing you need is to find the directions or instructions manual that came with your fountain so that you can follow the directions given by the manufacturer. If you built your fountain yourself then you should know the fountain and don’t need any directions manual. Before starting any cleaning work on the fountain it is very important to switch off or unplug the pump as a safety precaution.
Step 2 – Getting Ready
Once you have unplugged the pump you can drain the fountain water. To do this all you have to do is to open the fountain’s drainage plug. Before cleaning the pipes it is very important to clean the fountain from any debris, algae and dirt build-up. This will be essential if you want to keep your pipes clean because if the pond is dirty then as soon as you switch the pump back on the dirt will go straight into the pipes. Use vinegar and water solution and a soft-bristled brush to scrub the dirt off the pond.
Step 3 – Cleaning the Fountain
Once the basin is clean you can now turn your attention to the pipes. To do this you shall use the pet fountain cleaning kit in which you should have more than one size pipe cleaners. Select which is the best pipe cleaner for the pipes on your fountain and gently insert the pipe cleaners into the pipes. Twist and scrub as best you can and then pull them out. Once you have done the scrubbing rinse the pipe by injecting water with a garden hose. You might have to repeat this action more than once to get cleaner pipes.
Step 4 – Rinsing the Pipes
The best way to rinse the pipes is to use the fountain’s mechanism itself. Now re-plug the fountain’s drainage plug and fill the pond with a mixture of water and vinegar solution. Five cups of vinegar should be enough for the solution. Next you should re-plug and switch on the water pump. Let the fountain run for at least two hours. The cleaning solution should help better remove any dirt left in the pipes.
Step 5 – Finishing up
Turn off the pump and unplug again the drainage plug and let the vinegar-water solution drain. Get your garden hose and rinse the fountain. Make sure to carefully rinse the pipes by injecting clean water in them. You are now ready to re-plug the drainage plug, switch on the pump and fill the fountain with water.
This is the easiest method to clean the pipes of your garden water fountain. It is a job which can be done by anyone as long as the pump is switched off and unplugged to safeguard the safety of the person cleaning the fountain.
