Kitchen countertops can come in a variety of different materials, colors, and sizes. A very popular countertop finish is tile. Tile countertops can add a great certain elegance to a kitchen. While tile is easy to clean immediately after a spill, it can begin to show signs of dirt, stains, and even mildew in the grout. Regular deep cleaning will keep your tile looking new. Here are some easy steps and very basic cleaning items.
Step 1 - Clean Countertop
Rinse down the countertop with a spray bottle of warm water and mild dish detergent to get the regular, everyday dirt off.
Step 2 - Use Tile Cleaner
Begin cleaning the grout with the tile and grout cleaner. Use the rubber gloves whenever using this type of product. It is a very strong cleaning agent that can burn your skin if it comes in contact with it.
Step 3 - Brush Your Grout
Apply some of the tile cleaner to a toothbrush and, using small brush strokes, begin scrubbing the grout. Start at one corner and begin working your way through all the grout lines. Scrub by applying the toothbrush, with pressure, to the grout lines and working it back and forth in small brush strokes.
If the stains are set deeply, and do not come off with the toothbrush, you can apply the tile cleaner directly to the grouting and let it set for a few minutes. Then apply the toothbrush again and scrub until it is clean.
After cleaning all the grout lines, then turn your attention to the tile itself and go through the same procedure.
Step 4 - Air Dry
Once you have finished with the scrubbing, let the tile and grout air dry for several hours.
Step 5 - Protect with Nail Polish
After the tile and grout has dried thoroughly, paint on some clear nail polish to the grouting. This will seal the grout from any other food and liquid stains. Allow the nail polish to dry overnight and then your countertop is like new again.
To keep your countertops clean and new looking, use a baking soda and vinegar solution once every six months. Scrub the counter top with a used fabric softener sheet and then rinse off well with water and let it dry over night.
