How to Connect Metal Trusses to a Block Wall

What You'll Need
Tape measure
Wall plates
Wire welder

You can connect metal trusses to a block wall with the right tools and materials. This home project should take a few hours to complete.

Step 1 – Mixing the Mortar

Put on protective eye wear and work gloves before you begin in order to protect your sight and your skin. In a wheelbarrow, use a hoe to combine an S-type mortar with water and sand. You will need about a half of a bag of mortar, 8 shovels full of sand and 3 gallons of water.

Step 2 – Applying the Mortar

Fill some of the blocks with the mortar. Start at one end of the wall and fill every fourth block.

Step 3 – Installing the Wall Plates

Use 16-inch top plates for this process. Insert a plate into the mortar with the hook facing downward. Continue securing plates in all of the blocks with mortar.  Be sure to allow the plates enough time to set completely.

Step 4 – Positioning and Securing the Metal Truss

Carefully position the truss onto the wall plate. Use a tape measure to be sure the truss is positioned properly.  Use your wire welder and a ¼-inch bead to secure the truss to the plate.
