How to Construct a Solid Load Bearing wall
You need a load bearing wall to support the load of the upper sections of the home. To build one, you need some knowledge about framing a home and basic construction. If you have the ability to build a stud wall and adopt some of the principles provided in this article regarding load bearing walls, you should be able to accomplish this task inside a weekend.
Step 1: Purchase Lumber for the Wall
You will need to visit a lumber yard or home improvement center in order to purchase the materials needed to build your solid load bearing wall. Use 2x4-inch wood to construct the walls. You will also need a circular saw to cut the wood to size as needed for the load bearing wall. If you do not own a circular saw, you can rent one from the home improvement center or a tool rental center in your community.
Step 2: Measure the Space
Measure the length of the room as well as the height, writing these measurements down on a piece of paper. These measurements are needed in order to determine the length of the 2x4-inch wood needed to create the top and bottom frame of your load bearing wall. You will also need these measurements to determine the height of the 2x4 wood that you need as studs for the wall.
Step 3: Cut the 2 X 4 Wood
Using the circular saw, cut 3 pieces of the 2x4 wood that match the length measurements that you took of the room. Two of the boards will be used in the top of the wall and 1 of the boards will form the bottom of the frame. Layout the frame by joining two of the 2x4 wood boards parallel to each other at the 4 inch side. Place a temporary nail at both ends to hole the boards together.
Cut the studs for the walls using the circular saw. Theses pieces should be 6 inches less than the total height of the wall that you measured in Step 2. This will account for the distance of the bottom 2x4 wood plate and the top 2 pieces you temporarily joined.
Step 4: Nail the Vertical 2x4 Wood Boards into the Frame
Place 2 pieces of the 2x4 at each of the ends of the framing boards. Nail these pieces in place. Space the rest of the vertical boards 16 inches apart and drive a nail into them from top and the bottom plates. Continue this process for all of the vertical boards, stopping periodically to check the squareness of wall.
Step 5: Install the Wall
With the boards in place, remove the temporary nails from the top plate and have the wall placed into position. Drive several nails into the header board to attach the top plate and several nails for the bottom to secure the wall in place.
