How to Convert Part of Your Garage into a Woodworking Shop
If you have a large garage, you can use a part of it to create a home woodworking shop. Follow the simple steps below to effectively plan and build a wood shop in your garage.
Step 1 – Prepare of the Garage
The first thing you need to do is prepare the garage by cleaning it. You should remove all the things you do not want from your garage and throw away all the things you do not need. Then you should make sure that things work properly. Check the garage door and lubricate the hinges and rollers if needed. Make the needed adjustments, and replace old or rusted locks and tracks.
Step 2 – Insulate the Garage
Since you will be working with wood, you need to make sure that the garage is properly insulated. Install sheet rocks on the ceiling and garage if the walls are bare. Make sure that the joints are sanded and taped properly. You should also paint the walls, choosing a light color that will help disperse of light in the room.
Step 3 – Install Lights
The next thing you need to do is install lights in the garage. The best idea is to install track lights on the ceiling. They are ideal for wood shops since you can adjust the spot lights to focus on specific areas of the room. When working with wood, you need adequate light that will eliminate any shadows that might exist in the garage.
Step 4 – Install Counters
Plan to install counters around the walls. You should also hang the cabinets above the counters, so that you have easy access to the shelves and tools. You should also install the peg-board between the bottom of the cabinets and the countertop, providing a place to hang your tools.
Step 5 – Organize the Garage and Woodworking Shop
Once you have installed all the necessary cabinets and benches, you need to organize your space. Allow enough space on the sides of the bench so that you don’t bump on other things while you are working with tools. Make sure that you organize the tools in the cabinets and drawers. It is a good idea to keep similar tools together in one drawer or location, so that you know what is where. Since you will be working with tools, you should have a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher in case of accidents.
