If you have a concrete patio you may want to cover it in pea gravel. Pea gravel is small gravel pebbles that are commercially sold at home improvement centers. The gravel is rounded like small peas, which is how it received its name. It is easy to walk on and provides a nice decorative element for your concrete patio. You will need to purchase several pounds of pea gravel, sand, and landscaping fabric to cover a concrete patio in pea gravel.

Prepare Patio for Pea Gravel

Once you have purchased the material from the home improvement center, clear any furniture or other obstructions from the patio. Sweep the patio with a broom to remove any remaining debris. Take a hoe and cut away about a foot of the sod that surrounds the patio. This will provide you with an area to anchor the landscaping fabric.

Secure Fabric and Pour Gravel

Once complete, roll out the fabric, completely covering the patio. Use wooden stakes to secure the fabric into the ground, staked into the area where the sod was taken up and set aside out of the way. Place a layer of sand over the landscaping fabric, completely covering it. Layer the pea gravel over it, creating a fine layer of sand and pea gravel. Tamp the pea gravel and sand down and your concrete patio is now ready for use.
