How to Creatively Package Homemade Holiday Cookies for Gifts

If you are running low on cash or are baffled as to what to get your co-workers, holiday cookies may be an ideal option. Cookies are simple and affordable to make, and best of all, baking your own cookies shows a lot of personal effort and initiative. If you are going to opt for this route though, you should take the time to package them in a creative and unique way. By doing so, your cookies will look like a well-thought out gift and not just a last-minute emergency present. With just a few materials, you can create a “Santa Jar” to contain your cookies.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Newspaper
  • Swing-top jar
  • Glue gun
  • Glue stick
  • Cotton balls
  • Plastic eyes
  • Red construction paper
  • Tape
  • Cellophane wrap

Step 1 – Prepare

Lay newspaper on a clean table. You do not want glue or other materials damaging your belongings, so remove all items that you do not want to risk getting ruined from your work area. Gather all required materials and place them on the newspaper so you have everything you need immediately. Insert the glue stick into the glue gun and plug it in. Allow it to warm up.

Step 2 – Make the Moustache and Beard

When the glue gun is warm, glue the cotton balls onto the jar to form Santa’s moustache and beard. To do this, apply the glue directly onto the glass jar in small portions at a time. On one side of the jar, find the middle of its height. Apply the glue in a semicircle shape. Now grab your cotton balls and stick them onto the glue. Spread the cotton balls out across the glue to make the moustache realistic.

Next, apply glue below the moustache in a beard pattern. Make sure you leave a small gap between the moustache and beard for the mouth. Once you have applied the glue, stick cotton balls onto the area to form the beard. Again, spread them out to make it look better. If the moustache or beard look too thin, repeat this step to apply another layer. This can be done until the desired thickness is achieved.

Step 3 – Attach the Eyes

Glue the plastic eyes onto the jar. To do this, apply a pea-sized amount of glue to the back of the eyes and stick them onto the jar. Make sure the eyes are above the moustache and beard, preferably two thirds of the way from the bottom. Larger plastic eyes almost always look better than smaller ones.

Step 4 – Attach the Hat

Create Santa’s hat out of the red construction paper. Curve the paper so that it is in the shape of a cone and ensure the base is the same size as the lid of the jar. Tape the paper to hold it in its shape. Next, apply a small dab of glue to the top of the cone and the edges of its base. Stick cotton balls onto these two areas and then glue the construction paper onto the lid.

Step 5 – Insert Cookies

Allow the glue to dry and then put your cookies inside. Line the inside of the jar with cellophane wrap and lay your cookies inside neatly. Close the lid and your project is finished. This makes a neat and interesting “Santa Jar” that your friends and co-workers will love to keep even after the cookies have been eaten.
