How to Cut a Laminate Countertop
Knowing how to cut laminate countertop material can save you a lot of money during a remodel. It will need to be done carefully to avoid damaging the counter.
Step 1 - Create Cut Line
The first thing you will need to do is to create a cut line with the masking tape. The masking tape will protect the cutting edge from chipping while you make the cut. It's best to use a wide masking tape, or place several strips down to cover a wider portion. This way, the circular saw won't gouge or chip the counter as you move it down the line.
Step 2 - Set up the Rip Fence
The rip fence will allow you to make a straight cut. If you don't have a rip fence, you can use a straight piece of wood clamped down securely instead.
Step 3 - Make the Cut
Follow the masking tape line and create the cut you need.
Step 4 - Sanding
Once the cut has been made you will want to sand the edge down. The belt sander will need to press against the substrate. Use a fine grit: 200 works best. Using the fine grit will slow down the process, but it will prevent lifting if the laminate is glued.
