How to Cut MDF Molding How to Cut MDF Molding

What You'll Need
Miter Saw
Sandpaper
Tape Measure
Pencil

Medium-density fiberboard or MDF molding is one of the most commonly used building materials. If you are going to install it, you need to know how to cut it properly. Follow the simple steps below to successfully cut MDF molding.

Step 1 - Measure the Molding

In order to make the proper cut, you need to make sure that you have the right dimensions. Take your tape measure and determine the dimension of the area that you are going to install the MDF molding. Once you have determined the dimension, measure this on the back of the MDF molding, and make a mark in the appropriate place.

Step 2 - Make the Cut

Now that you have the appropriate dimensions, you need to make the cut. Place the MDF molding in a miter saw, and cut it to the appropriate angle. When working with MDF, you want to make sure that you use caution. MDF can be very fragile, so you must be careful not to break it when you are making the cut.

Step 3 - Smooth the Edges

After you make the cut, you may need to smooth out the cut edge with a piece of sandpaper so that you can adjoin it to the next piece of molding.
