In building a new wall in your home or basement, and in using metal studs for those walls, you'll need to know how to cut those studs. Here's what you'll need to do.

Step 1 - Choose the Right Tin Snips

Unless you've cut metal wall stud before, you will unlikely have a pair of the right tin snips handy. If you do have a pair of tin snips, test them on a piece of scrap metal stud material to be sure they cut efficiently. If they don't, buy a new pair at a local hardware store or building supply. Your new snips should be able to cut 20 gauge steel.

Step 2 - Measure and Mark Your Stud

Use your measuring tape to measure the length of the stud you'll be cutting, then use a permanent marker and mark the spot on the stud where you'll make the cut. Use your carpenters square and the marker to draw a cut line across the surface of the stud.

Step 3 - Cut Your Stud

With the tips of your snips on the cut line you marked, cut carefully along the line until you've cut through the wide surface and the two side surfaces.
