If you wish to design a laundry room there are a variety of factors to take into account. The laundry room is not a room which one should neglect or furnish haphazardly. It is a useful area which should be well planned and laid out. If you take the time to design it, you can ensure a more pleasant environment for you to be in while the chores and laundry are being carried out, and at the same time make efficient use of the space available. Let us discuss some factors to give some thought to.

Step 1 - Preparing the Area

The laundry room may have already been equipped with the washing machine, dryer and clothes lines amongst other things. There may also be a number of items which you may wish to remove or replace. So, if the area is crammed with items, it is best to empty it so as to have a better idea of the space you have at your disposal. Then, take a note of the dimensions, especially if you intend to order or build storage cabinets or shelving systems.

Step 2 - Planning

It is a good idea to make a list of the main functions that the laundry room is meant to be used for. Most laundry rooms are not restrained to simply doing the laundry and clothes related chores. If the space permits, you should make best use of the space available for storage purposes. The laundry room may also serve for other purposes, depending on the family's needs. Depending on such functions, determine what items will be placed in the room and then decide where it is best to place them. The laundry room should be well lit and ventilated. So it is a good idea to have a large window, or more, or even a skylight.

Step 3 - Painting

Once you have emptied the room, give it a nice fresh coating of paint. This will greatly help to give a face lift to the room.

Step 4 - The Laundry Tub

Some clothes require hand washing. Hence it is very useful to have a small laundry tub where you can wash such items. This will obviously require you to have a suitable plumbing connection. So you will have to consider whether this is possible or not.

Step 5 - Placing the Washing Machine and other Appliances

Next, you have to place the washing machine, dryer and any other appliances. You obviously need to have a nearby electrical source. Take into account whether you use a front loader or a top loader, for maneuvering purposes. It is recommended to have at least a small table or work area where you can place your clothes to fold them. Determine whether you will place this against a wall or in the middle of the room.

Step 6 - Storage

Any household tries to make up space for the neverending items that need to be stored away. Hence it is a good idea to use up the laundry room's wall space to have cabinets or shelves where you can store items. Try to plan this out in advance by having an idea of the type and size of items you intend to store, so as to make the best use of the space available. The first priority should be placed on having storage space for laundry-related items such as detergents, pegs, hangers, laundry baskets and similar stuff. But once there is further space available, make sure to use it well.

Step 7 - Drying

The laundry room is also used to dry your clothes indoors, especially on rainy days. Hence you should appropriate sufficient space for a few clothes lines.

Step 8 - Ironing Area

It is a good idea to appropriate some space in your laundry room in order to do the ironing.
