Whenever you are deciding on wood stair cases there are several different factors that you should keep in mind. It is important that you have a complete design prepared in your head so that you will be able to make the job go much easier and smoother. The more prepared you are for your wood stair case, the better off you are going to be when it comes to putting it all together.

Step 1 – Kit vs. Scratch

The first thing that you are going to need to do is decide if you want to build your stairs from scratch of if you want to get a kit. If you are concerned with a budget, then a kit is going to be the best way to go financially. It is also an easier route to take if you are not very skilled when it comes to building things of this nature. However, when it comes to building one yourself you will be able to make it exactly how you want.

Step 2 – Budget

Make sure that you have a budget in mind whenever you are getting started. You will need to keep in mind that a spiral staircase is very expensive. As previously mentioned, a regular staircase is going to be the least costly. However, if you are building a staircase from scratch, make sure that the wood and tools that you need are ones that you are going to be able to afford. You will need to keep in mind that all of these materials are going to add up so you should plan accordingly.

Step 3 – Wood Types

It is a good idea to get the type of wood that you wish to use decided before you do anything. The aesthetics of your wood will have a lot to do with the type that you get. Think of whether or not you want the wood to remain natural or if you will want to stain it or put carpet over it. These are things that you will need to think about so that you will be able to get the right type of wood for the job.

Step 4 – Measurements

You will need to get good and accurate measurements of the area that the stairs are going to go into. Keep in mind that some stairs are going to take up more room than others so if you are looking to fill a lot of space then you will want spiral staircases where as with someone with limited space will need just a regular set of stairs.

Step 5 – Number of Steps

You will need to decide how many steps you want to have before you can go out and purchase material. Think about how steep you want the stairs to be. How shallow or steep the stairs are will have a lot to do with how many there will be.
