How to Disable a Side Impact Airbag

If you are working on something on the side of your car and are afraid that your side impact airbag might deploy accidentally, it is best if you disable it first. Disabling the airbag is not a very difficult task and you don’t need any special tools to do it.

Tools and Materials

  • Car Key
  • Pliers (optional)

Step 1: Turn off the Car

Make sure that the car is turned off. Turn the key into the “off” position to make sure that nothing is running in the car. You can also remove/disconnect the battery for added safety (actually, this step will already work in some cars).

Step 2: Finding the Right Fuse

Refer to your car's owner's manual to locate the fuse box. Open the box and check the diagram on the underside of the cover. Locate where the airbag fuse is located.

Step 3: Removing the Airbag Fuse

You don’t need any tools to take this fuse out. Just use your fingers and pull it off the connection gently. If it doesn’t want to come off, apply a little more force or use some pliers. But be careful not to damage the fuse.

Step 4: Check

Attach the battery and turn on the car. The SRS light should illuminate on your dashboard, signaling that the airbag system has been disabled and that also includes the side impact airbag.
