Air conditioning duct cleaning is very important for keeping the air conditioning in good shape. Air conditioning is used excessively in summers and the accumulation of dust and other household particles on the duct effects the efficiency of the system. Regular duct cleaning is very important for the flow of fresh and healthy air through the house and will ensure longevity of the air conditioning and a more efficient working of the system.

The cleaning of a duct involves the cleaning of all return-air grilles and registers inside the air ducts and inside the ventilating system. Once in a while, a disinfectant should be run through the air duct system to make sure that any bacterial infestation is destroyed. It is always better to get a professional cleaning team to get such a work done but if you want to do it without the professional help, air conditioning duct cleaning can be efficiently done in 2 hours.

Step 1: Prepare to Clean

Put on heavy duty gloves and a face mask as the cleaning may include a lot of dust and bacteria being scattered. Place rags under the air conditioning equipment to avoid the dust falling on the floor/carpet. Make sure that the area just outside the air duct is clean so that when the covers are removed nothing gets in. Remove the air conditioning duct vent cover by unscrewing the screws using a screwdriver and take the cover off.

Step 2: Clean the Covers

Take the covers and wash them with soapy water. 2 to 3 drops of dish-washing detergent can be added to a sink of warm water for a thorough cleaning. After thoroughly cleaning the vent covers, rinse with clean water and dry with a clean rag.

Step 3: Dusting

Dust inside the duct using a cleaning brush. Wipe with a rag and try to clean as much area as possible. Make sure that the walls on the inside are clean. Care should be taken not to damage any filters inside during this process.

Step 4: Vacuum

Use the long reach attachment of the vacuum cleaner to clean the air conditioning ducts. Although professional cleaning is required for a perfect cleaning, its possible to do a fairly good job without any outside help.

Step 5: Disinfect

If cleaning after a long time, use a disinfectant. Wipe the insides with a rag soaked in disinfectant and run the disinfectant through the air duct system. If the duct is made of metal, a simple disinfectant will do. However, if mold is present on fiberglass duct layers, it is best to replace the layer as most biocides do not prevent mold from returning in a few days.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

This may be a good time to replace filters if they havent been in use for a while. Reapply the air conditioning vent covers. Use the vacuum cleaner to clean any dust on and around the covers. Tidy up and the job is all done.
