Water hammer sounds are a concurring pressure shocks that gets formed when there is an abrupt alterations to the speed of liquid, particularly water, in pipes. The presence of water hammer is also an indication that your water pipe system either needs repair of replacement. Step 1-Design for the Water Piping System
Your water piping system must be designed in such a way that the existence of water hammer is avoided. The speed of liquids, particularly water, must be below 5 fps so as to avoid water hammer. Consult your local building code on how a water piping system should be designed and installed in your home or building.
Step 2-Replacement of Pipes
Large piping is necessary to lower the flow velocity of water. If you find that your water pipes are small, replace your small water pipes with bigger water pipes using an adjustable wrench to remove water hammer. Wear a good pair of working gloves while doing this step.
Step 3-Insulating the Pipes
If you have access to your water pipe, insulate the water pipe where you suspect the water hammer is coming from by wrapping the water pipe with an old towel or shirt. Wrapping your water pipe in cloth will minimize the rattling of your water pipes.
Step 4-Clearing Air Chambers of Water
For those fluid pipes that have air chambers packed with water in their plumbing system, this problem should be corrected by simply shutting off the main water valve. The faucets located indoor and outdoor should be opened and have water run through to drain. It is a good idea to have air chambers installed in the plumbing system if it does not have one installed.
Step 5-Installation of a Water Hammer Eliminator
If the rattling sounds still are not eliminated, consider the installation of a water hammer eliminator. This gadget performs like a shock absorber or air chamber, which could be installed to the existing plumbing system.
Step 6-Make Valve Adjustments
When needed, make adjustments on the valve used at points where an abrupt altercation occurs in water velocity. Determine the kind of valve to use that will minimize water hammer. There are instances when a form of control can be placed by the exhaust vent in order to eliminate rattling sounds.
Step 7-Install a Desurger
