How to Faux Paint

Follow the simple steps below to effectivel faux paint your room.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • paints
  • painting tools such as brushes, rollers, rags, or sponges
  • sheet plastic
  • painters' tape

Step 1 - Decide on a Color Scheme and Faux Finish Technique

To find out exactly how much paint and which colors of paint to purchase, you need to plan early on which colors you want to use for your decor. Consider your budget and exactly how many colors you can afford to make your faux finish as realistic as possible.

You also need to decide the overall look you are going for. Do you want a faux leather pattern? Marble? Clouds? Research your particular technique, and make a note of the exact materials and quantities of paint you need.

Step 3 - Purchase and Organize Your Tools and Materials

Buy the specific paint colors and amounts you need for your particular finish. Gather any tools that are necessary for that technique, such as special brushes, rollers, rags or sponges.

Step 4 - Prepare the Base Paint Surface

Protect your nonpaintable surfaces with painter's tape and plastic. Give your room a fresh coat or two of paint of a compatible color, making sure beforehand that the wall is free from chips, drips, dirt and other blemishes.

Step 5 - Create the Faux Finish

Apply your paints to create the faux finish you want, using the directions for your particular technique as a guide.
