How to Fix a Stuck Adjustable Piano Bench How to Fix a Stuck Adjustable Piano Bench

What You'll Need
Screwdriver
Lubricant
Pliers
Hammer
Scrap wood

An adjustable piano bench is an important part of the comfort of the pianist as they play. Having the right posture at the piano is important to how the music is played. With the adjustable piano bench the pianist is not locked into one specific height. They can easily change the height depending on where they are playing, or what type of piano they are using. When the piano bench is stuck and will not adjust, here are a few steps to fix it.

Step 1 - Check Condition of Piano Bench

It is important to inspect the piano bench before you do any work on it. This way you will be able to trace the problem back to its origin rather than speculating.

Step 2 - Apply Lubrication to Metal Sliders

One of the most common problems with the adjustable piano bench is that the metal sliders are dry. This will cause the metal to bind as you try to adjust them. Apply some lubrication like silicone spray or WD-40 for a smoother operation.

Step 3 - Bend Rails into Position

Another common problem is that the rails are bent so that the piano bench gets stuck. Lay a piece of scrap wood over the railing and tap it with a hammer to bend it back. Sometimes a pair of pliers will work also.
