How to Fix Bamboo Vertical Blinds How to Fix Bamboo Vertical Blinds

What You'll Need
Replacement slats
Step ladder
Putty knife
Wood glue

Though bamboo vertical blinds tend to be relatively hard-wearing, there can also be occasions when they need to be repaired for a variety of reasons. By following a few simple steps, you will find that fixing your vertical bamboo blinds is a task that you can easily undertake yourself.

Step 1 – Inspection

Your first step should be to examine the bamboo vertical blinds to determine whether you can find the source of the problem. With this type of blind, the issue is likely to lie with the bamboo slats or the cords that hold them together. A bamboo slat that has suffered damage will be easier to spot by closing the blinds before undertaking an examination. If one or several slats fail to turn at all, the problem is likely to be caused by the components holding the slats in place. If nothing occurs when you twist the pole to open or close the blinds, it is the mechanism that is defective.

Step 2 – Damaged Slat

Where the slats of your bamboo vertical blinds have become frayed or worn enough to catch on things, use a piece of medium grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. If necessary, finish off this process by applying some varnish.

In the event that the slat of your bamboo vertical blinds has suffered a hairline crack, consider whether it can be rectified by applying some wood glue. If the slat is broken, it will need to be replaced. If you were not provided with any spare slats when you purchased the blinds, check the instruction manual to see whether this highlights where replacements can be purchased.

Use a step ladder to reach the rail beyond the valance and remove the stem from the carrier that grips the slat with a pair of pliers so that it can be replaced. If the slats are also linked by a cord close to the base of the blinds, the entire thing may need to be removed to unthread the cord so the slat can be removed.

Step 3 – Defective Rail and Carriers

Where the slats fail to twist as they should, the problem is likely to lie with the runner that holds the slat and carries it along the rail. Use a pair of pliers to manipulate the carrier that holds the slat to determine whether it moves as it should and to check whether it has become dislodged or has suffered a fault. If any pieces have broken away, the component will need to be replaced. Examine the track that bears the slats to ensure that it has not suffered damage or become warped.

Step 4 – Controls

If the bamboo vertical blinds fail to open properly, examine the controls for the blinds to determine the cause. A pulley system will be used to open and close the blinds and the process can fail if this system suffers a fault. Check that the cords have not become snagged and that fasteners used for the component parts of the controls have not come loose.
