How to Fix Sticky Access Doors in a Garage Furnace

100-grit sandpaper
Spray solvent

Access doors on the garage furnace is an important part of the device. The access doors allow you to get inside the furnace to light it as well as cleaning it. Access doors that are sticking are a simple nuisance that is easily rectified.

Step 1 – Inspect the Access Doors

Open the access doors and inspect them to tell where they are sticking. This will tell you where to concentrate your efforts. The access doors may stick due to carbon buildup, warping metal or a loose clasp.

Step 2 – Loose Clasp

All access doors have some sort of clasp which helps them stay closed. The doors can stick when these are loose. Open the access doors and tighten the screws holding the clasps in place.

Step 3 – Cleaning Carbon

Carbon can adhere to the access doors which will cause them to stick. Sand down the edges of the access doors and then apply solvent to the hinges and edges. Wipe them down after a few minutes. Repeat as needed.

Step 4 – Lubrication

The simplest solution is to spray the hinges of the access doors with lubrication. You can also spray the edges to prevent them from sticking.
