How to Frame Fine Art Prints

Fine art prints are an inexpensive way to bring an artistic touch to any room. Selecting the right frame is the finishing touch that makes a fine art print look complete. This is an easy and fun project, and it can be accomplished in a short time with some simple tools.

What You Will Need:

  • Utility knife
  • Metal ruler
  • Framing mat
  • Picture glass
  • Cardboard square
  • Framing hardware
  • Art frame
  • Staples
  • Stapler

Step 1—Measure for Frame Size

Measure the diagonal size of the art print from one top corner to one bottom corner. Use this plus the length and width of one side each to calculate the size of the frame you will need.

Step 2—Select Frame Color and Style

Consider the colors of your art print in relation to the color scheme of the room. Select a frame that will complement each of these colors for a harmonious look.

Step 3—Select Framing Mat

If you are using a framing mat, select one in a complementary color the same way as with the frame. Use your utility knife and metal ruler as a guide to cut the mat to the size you want.

Step 4—Fit Pieces Together

Fit the art print and mat together and make sure all edges are straight. Place the glass into the frame, followed by the mat and print. Fit the cardboard to the back and secure all pieces together with staples.
