It is important to know how to free up a frozen go kart torque converter. If not and there is continued use of the go kart, serious problems can arise, including safety concerns for the driver. Most go karts use a clutch to send the power from the engine to the drive wheel. This clutch is similar to a clutch in a car. It is used to switch gears as the go kart is driving. There are many different types of clutches on the market but a centrifugal clutch is the correct one for go karts.

So why do people use torque converters? Because power and speed are important to many. These converters are used to get more power from the engine, in turn, switching the transmission into an automatic. The shifting becomes a smooth action as the converter shifts from low gear and above as speed increases. Torque converters also tend to last longer than centrifugal clutches.

Many systems are weatherproof. Though these converters are not cheap; the increase in speed and off road capabilities are appealing. Along with those benefits, braking and vehicle control are also enhanced. Torque converters need to be cleaned and lubricated in order to maintain performance and prevent freezing or locking up. If the converter does freeze up, there are steps to fix it.

Step 1 - Remove Torque Converter

Make sure the go kart is completely shut off. Locate the drive unit cover. Remove it. Gently pull the torque converter until it is removed off the drive shaft. Take the evaporative solvent and a rag and clean all dirt, dust and belt residue. Clean both the converter and all the surfaces surrounding it on the go kart. There is no reason to attempt to take the converter apart for further cleaning. It will do more damage than good. Just be thorough when cleaning the unit.

Step 2 - Lubrication

It is important to use the correct lubricant. It must be a dry lubricant and non-oil based. Take the time to re-lubricate all the parts of the torque converter. Be careful and aware not to get any lubricant on the face plates. These plates have contact with the belt and will become a safety hazard if lubricant gets on them.

Step 3 - Put the Torque Converter Back

Re-attach the converter to the drive shaft. Reassemble the drive shaft and make sure it is back in place correctly. Turn on the go kart and take a test drive.

Go karts are fun to ride in. Many people take the time to build them from the ground up. In installing a torque converter, many parts of the go kart become enhanced, allowing new adventures to emerge. Just like a road vehicle, it needs daily maintenance. This will prevent big repairs later and fewer problems with any parts freezing up.
