How to Grow a Patio Herb Garden How to Grow a Patio Herb Garden

What You'll Need
Planting containers
Composted soil
Herb seeds
Pebbles
Watering can

If you're interested in growing your own herbs, you may want to consider creating a patio herb garden. Although this task may initially strike you as daunting, it can be quite simple, and even fun, if you have the right set of tools.

When acquiring the necessary materials, make sure your planting containers feature holes in the bottom and that the number of containers you purchase is relative to the number of herbs you intend to plant.

Step 1: Prep Your Herbs

Begin the planting process by lining the bottom of your containers with small pebbles. Next, proceed to fill them with a 2-to-1 ratio of sand and composted soil, taking care to leave about an inch of free space at the very top. You will now need to use a watering can to vigorously water your planting containers. After giving the water ample time to exit the containers via their bottom holes, you're free to plant your herb seeds. When performing this task, remember not to plant multiple seed types in the same container.

Step 2: Grow Your Herbs

Once all the preparations have been made, place your planting containers in an area of your porch that receives lots of direct sunlight. Within the next 4 to 6 weeks, your herb garden should begin to take shape.
